On Friday, I played the first Ukulele Caravan show of the evening, Ukulele Talent Scouts, during the Caravan’s stop over in New York, on its way up to Massachusettes and the Cape. An early show at the Sidewalk Cafe on Avenue A in the East Village, Moose Karloff hosted and I played a new song “Between The Waters”, as well as a John Hartford song “Immanuel Cant” (which I don’t think I’ve ever played in public for a real show) and a cover of David Allen Coe’s “You Never Even Call Me By My Name”, a classic of Country & Western music that everyone should know, and that I enjoyed leading the crowd in a sing-along during the chorus.

This weekend was also the time for the New York Uke Fest that, while I was unable to attend, several players came over to the Ukulele Talent Scouts that I met such as blues uke player Hal Brolund and the Austrialian player Rose Turtle Ertler, whose songs sound like Nick Drake to me if he played the ukulele. And of course, if female.

All in all a great little show with a great line-up of people. And I’m having a great time with all of the weirdos in the ukulele scene. Moving on up, I feel like. Moving up the ladder of the highly stratified New York ukulele scene. Oh, yeah.
